"Vhat is it zhat matters most to you in life...? If you don't fight for it vith all your strength, can you really call yourself alive...?"
-------------------------------------
When Charles brought up his accent, at first--Lukas simply brushed it off, looking away quietly. It had happened before--people had a chuckle over it, and that was that. However, as the man continued, Lukas' brows furrowed at what he was hearing, and he looked back at Charles with a scrutinizing look, staring at the man for a moment.
"You--" Lukas spoke with the obvious intent of verbally lashing back--but cut himself off, sucking in a breath of air. He couldn't upset this man. As irritated as he was by what the man had said--compromising the position that he was in now wouldn't be wise. He wished he could come up with some kind of witty response, but--that had never really been his line of expertise. Instead, he turned away again, frustrated. "I don't find it all zhat surprising. It's human nature to try to survive. Zhe vorld isn't vhat it used to be--countries hardly matter anymore. There are no 'German people'--only people who happen to speak German. Zhey're just...people. And zhey vant to survive as much as anyone else. Say vhat you vant about zhose people--it von't stop zhem from living. Vords can't kill you, after all." But orbital lasers could. Which, Lukas assumed, they would begin doing to the rest of the human race in general very soon. "As for your respect...as much as I hate to say it, zhat's fine. I've got much bigger things to vorry about zhan your respect for me...so view me however you like...I don't care." Astrid was the final goal here--and she mattered to Lukas more than any amount of respect anyone could give him--no matter how big or small. His sister was worth more to him than anything in the world--even, as he reminded himself, the lives of thousands upon thousands of strangers.
His train of thought was cut off, however, as he heard Jo screaming in the other room. On pure reflex, he turned quickly, looking down the hall as her screams continued. He blinked a few times, then looked back to the Charles he was with, seeming alarmed. "Vhat's going on out zhere--?"

Jo could neither see or hear the mocking quality in Charles` expression and voice- the only thing she could hear was the expulsion of her own ragged breath, and the anguished screams projected directly into her brain that bounded off the walls of her skull. She had given up on gritting her teeth, or trying to fight back against the restraints- she allowed her jaw to loosen, gasping and screaming each time a particularly heavy bout of emotion crashed against her. She was past exhausted- physically, emotionally, and mentally-- and even after losing any form of coherent thought long ago, she felt assured that this was no where near over.
His words, at first, had confused her-- but she took it as an indication that this would stop and felt almost somewhat relieved. At least, until the images projected on the screens flashed to a different time- the modern era, No Man`s Land.
Her breath hitched, and she momentarily forgot the immense pain she was in to stop and just watch-- her very first day here, when all she had on her mind was a fabricated sense of justice and a paycheck. Her chest filled with raw emotion, her own this time- tears rapidly spilling out the corners of her forcibly widened eye and her chest heaving as heavy foreboding fell over her-- only because she knew what came next. "S-Stop--" She choked out, her words sounding more like a pained rasp than actual syllables- as the next barrage of images came, she forced herself to stop from crying out.
First was Jack- hope embodied into one being. A first glance at a better tomorrow, a fighting change against their underdog conditions-- and then a fist knocked directly through the cavity of his chest, and she felt it from where she stood. That was the first time... the first time she had killed another human so aimlessly, out of nothing but pure rage and vengeance in mind-- the first of many, many times. She would have thought herself a monster, way back when-- now she spoke the words 'necessary evil' like they had any real right to be together. She had succeeded in leading so many people to their deaths, it was all her fault in one way or another- and each time, she couldn`t help but think... maybe if she was a little faster. Maybe if she had been there, maybe if she was stronger-- but Jack`s death alone showed that her presence did absolutely nothing for the greater good. She had thought she would fail as a leader, way back then... and boy- had she failed.
Then was Akuryo. The feeling of helplessness reigning over her, causing her to buckle slightly in her seat was all too familiar- one by one, they had all been cut down by the Inquisitor. And, why...? Why...? Because, simply put-- he was here to kill her. And he was going to make as painful as possible- in so, so many ways. Victory over her rival, victory over a mechanical monster out for humanity`s blood, the blood she had sworn to protect and love with all she had-- was obsolete by the end. She had never once stopped mourning the collateral of losses they had suffered that day. That day...
Psychic tendrils danced in her vision, and her chest tightened up with intense fear. He stood there, still, like some sort of looming ghost-- his lifeless red eyes focused on her motionless form all along, mocking without even trying. He wanted to be sure she knew this was for her- that she was next, and there was nothing to be done about it, because she was weak and so was everything she stood for. She couldn`t move, couldn`t scream- as before her, psychic manifestations leaking from that monster swallowed up person after person. The sound of bone and muscle crunching resounded through her head, surely added sound effects intended to mesh her psyche all the more-- more screams of pain, all asking for their boss to leap to their rescue. She`d done it before, why not now...? Why not now...? They were but manifestations of the mind, yet the effects were too real for reality-- there was no way it was reality. Just... the nightmare of some broad who had gone insane so long before. Someone who had already been broken, but had yet to realize it...
That was the downhill spiral, from bad to worse-- she felt a spark of hope bubbling in her throat, an involuntary reaction to viewing Henry`s smile over again. The relief she felt was too real... the Kingpin was dead and gone, so briefly... her friend stood before her, hand outreached and words promising-- only for him to disappear from sight completely. Her eyes shot open wider, pulse and breath quickening in a panic- that time, it was an innocent man. An innocent man who had been forced to watch her self destructive flames from afar, whom had been dragged into a situation he had no place in-- that was her fault. She involved the Family. She had changed... that was what he said...
And, of course-- the last one to play. For an instant, Jo`s lips tightened into a straight line, feigning strength as her body trembled. It was dark... so dark... she could feel the burning sensation of rope burning against her pale and exposed skin, drowsiness rowing her in an out of consciousness... until she became fully awake, finding the only light source in the room to be a dimly lit candle. And just as she got a look as his eyes- auburn, the glint of genius replaced by the all-too-familiar glint of madness. A piercing pain rippled through her thigh, and another scream ripped free from her dry throat-- she panted afterward, working to catch her breath-- but one could practically see the little remains of sanity she had left slipping through her fingers as they clenched tightly on the chair. This was too much. This was all too much...
Her eye stared ahead, horrified, panicked, and despairing as she could almost feel the sensation of clenched scissors ripping through muscle. Then, inevitably- right through his heart. She watched the light fade from his eyes, his body grow limp, his skin grow pale, and she screamed again- overwhelmed by the sudden onslaught of emotions produced by a man whom she has personally shown hell. There-- right there, that was the beginning. The beginning of the end, a flip had switched and from there it was all downhill-- nothing would ever be the same. Claus had been a sad, husk of a man, that she had destroyed all by herself... and by ending him-- she was a savior.
That was what... Ryder had said, right...? She had... released him... released because this world was awful, it was dying all around them despite their efforts-- and Claus had chosen her to release him. If it wasn`t for her, he might still be... alive... and maybe, just maybe-- he could have ended up like her. And how awful would that be...?
Nothing was registering but the fact that everyone was dying. There was no hope. Everyone was dying now, and that was all the future that they had in store. Death. Everyone was going to be gone--and there was nothing she could do about it. Nothing...
Then she realized that after so long the pain was coming back in like the tide, and when the current ripped through it left muscle and bone screaming in its wake. Her own screams became louder, then hoarser. Tears fell continuously, quiet mumbled pleads escaping her. She quickly lost track of her own words; they jumbled together in an incoherent mass saying more stupid things like please stop and please let me go and I don`t wanna die. It was as humiliating and useless as it was every other time she had feared for her life- but, she couldn`t help it, the words poured out.
If she had been in the right mind for speculation, she would have guessed that they were almost done with... whatever this was- just as imagery of herself, younger appeared. This all began to make sense as the images portrayed a tall, dark-skinned and white-haired male-- one that even while younger, she recognized at a mere glance. His story was one she was familiar with... but, not like this-- never like this.
She couldn`t bring herself to feel rage over his past, nothing but sheer grief and pity in waves- washed in with every bit of feeling he had experience throughout his lifetime. The lifetime she had cut short... by aiding that thing. It was complex- she hated the Inquisitor more than she hated any other being in existence, but the thought of his demise brought a seed of deep self-loathing to her insides. He was an opposing force- he led a lifestyle driven by hate, by revenge. She allowed herself sympathy, or at least-- she would have, if she could form a coherent thought through the extensive amount of trauma tackling her all at once.
What came next, however-- she did not want to sympathize with. Once again, Jo tried to snap her head free of the machine`s grip on her-- but it refused to comply, keeping her head craned right in place. Soon enough- Xiu Siwang`s hundreds of years of life were flashing before her eyes-- and with that came the pressure of each and every trial and tribulation that came with it. She didn`t want this- she didn`t want to humanize her, view her as anything above scum that had death coming long ago-- but soon her past came to light, and Jo`s eyes softened.
Struggles had forced her to adapt, had prompted her to want to seek some kind of change-- it didn`t matter how she did it. The means that brought her to that end stopped mattering after hundreds of years- in Jo`s case, the means that brought her to that end stopped mattering after a few months. There was a pattern here, one Jo wasn`t capable of noticing right about now-- but time and time again, she had been warned. Warned that she was one of many, doomed to end in the same place. "N-No..." She whimpered, trying to squeeze her eye shut tight again- the machine retaliated, keeping her eyelid kept up in place. She had a part in ending that... years after years of conflict and work... but, she had-- threatened the order. She had threatened her world... it was... only inevitable...
What came next caught her off guard. Her shoulders slacked, almost relaxing- widened eye staring up at the young vigilante before her. This was... the male in the photo from earlier...? No, this was Charles Paladin-- not the Charles Paladin she knew. No, this one was... genuine-- human. Yeah... human...
She wanted to glance over her shoulder, but the restraints didn`t permit it- so she continued staring ahead, silent tears still rolling down her cheeks. Within moments, she stopped seeing Charles-- she saw herself.
He was devout to justice, black and white because no one really knew what to do with gray. In the heat of conflict, the good guys and bad guys were color coded for your convenience, unlike out there in the real world-- but then time passed. People interfered. You can`t fight fire with ice- you need to fight it with fire. You lower yourself, in the name of the greater good-- because so long as your heart is in the right place, then everything`s okay. What makes a hero isn`t his actions- but his results. Kill a hundred to save a thousand, kill a million to save two million. Strike fear into the heart of your enemies-- and you`ve won.
Until, that is, mortality hits you like a speeding bullet. Time and time again, she had been near death-- and it hadn`t occurred to her, that everything up until then would lead to... nothing.
What had been the point until now...? Humanity... was a vile, vile thing- it couldn`t be saved. Her efforts were in vein... all she could do now was... release it...
For an instant, she couldn`t breathe- then, just as abrupt as all the other times, a prolonged cry of agony ripped free from her lungs. Something deep inside her snapped- eyes on fire all over again.
"NO MORE, NO MORE--!!" She thrashed about wildly again, this time more sporadic- any hint of control she may have previously had over her movements was long gone now. "IF YOU DON`T STOP I SWEAR I`LL KILL MYSELF RIGHT HERE--!!" She readied her teeth over her tongue, intending to bite straight through it- there was no way she`d live past that amount of blood loss with her prior injuries still weighing her. "I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU-!! LET - ME - GO!!"

Charles smirked upon hearing Smile's words "You definitely know hot to keep yourself alive, hell, I'd say you deserve reaching your goals moreso than anyone else here, truly commendable..." he leaned against the entrance, still smirking as he continued to remark about him "Truly, if the German people were anything like you, they'd have saved themselves from near-genocide in the 40s.... truly a pathetic people..." at this point it was obvious he was trying to get under Smile's skin. Despite all that had been said and done, he was still testing Smile, seeing how far he could get into Smile's head. Of course, Jo's screaming was hard to ignore, Charles didn't seem to care, but her certainly seemed somewhat disdained as Smile brought it up "What is necessary, that is all. I can assure you that she is suffering no real harm, she is simply learning the truth... which is quite ugly, mind you..."
Even as Jo screamed in pain, Charles maintained his smile. If anything it had grown, he had gained pleasure from seeing Jo's own suffering, behind that cold and calculating man was a sadistic monster. He was born an AI, but as he spoke earlier, he had learned. he was programmed to learn like a human being. Originally he was little more than a computer, but he had developed a personality, passions, sins, he may be made of metal and wires, but he was far above anything anyone could ever envision for an AI. He was created to be a guardian, to be the hero that the original Charles Paladin meant to be, but he was now just as sick and twisted as the people he believed had to be exterminated from this world "Hate me all you want Josephine... what you see is the truth. And the truth can't stop. If the truth hurts... well... would you rather live in ignorance Josephine...? That certainly doesn't seem like you... so bare with the pain... know the truth... the truth to this awful world." the screen then flashes a more current image into Jo's head. Carrion Land was now but rubble and wreckage. Corpses littered what remained of the halls of Carrion Land. Flashes of the base elf-destructing, rubble falling on footmen, killing hundreds. Images of Lezlee and Elliot being crushed and killed. Images of Bunny shooting herself and falling to the ground, apparently dead in the presence of two others who certainly weren't with Vulture Team. Just death, the death of everything she had fought for. Her faction was gone, her friends were dead, she had lost everything now "You have a choice Josephine... you saw the fate Charles Paladin suffered. You can either die like him... or you can rise above your own humanity. You must be the pinnacle justice of this new world! YOU must be the one to bring justice to the world... I am but a messenger... I cannot be the vanguard... that is the role you must take up... as the leader of The Trust!"

"Vhat is it zhat matters most to you in life...? If you don't fight for it vith all your strength, can you really call yourself alive...?"
-------------------------------------
Lukas couldn't help but grimace when he heard more of Jo's shouting from down the hall--but quickly stiffened up his facial expression as Charles' voice brought him back to the current moment. Necessary...sometimes, pain was necessary. He knew that well. Sometimes, to save others, you had to test yourself, put yourself through challenges--normally, he would have tried to alienate Jo's voice from its source, try to imagine that it was some other woman he didn't care about screaming in there--but at this point, that just wouldn't work. He tried his best to ignore it, instead attempting to focus on the rest of what Charles had said, replying,
"...Thank you. And...I don't see any point in judging people on zheir past." He saw Charles' smirk, and it became obvious that the man was just trying to get to him. The subject matter was really starting to irk him now--as much as he had wanted to estrange himself from any sort of companionship with those from his home, Germany was just that--his home. As much as he didn't care for strangers, he also knew that people didn't always die for specific reasons--it was often harsh circumstance that put people in danger. That was another thing he knew well. "Yes, zhe forties came and vent, but now zhey're gone. It's been a hundred years. Things have changed." He averted his eyes then, adding on a bit more in a hushed mutter, "It's not just going to be zhe Germans who are going to have to fight to avoid genocide now." He felt himself in a position now that he had never found himself in before. He was working with Charles now for the sole reason of having his sister be saved--and he wouldn't trade Astrid for anyone in the world--not even humanity as a whole. And yet, unlike before, he began to feel a vague sense of guilt deep down in his gut. Perhaps it was Jo's screams that had brought it to the surface--the guilt came up as an ominous sense of nausea, and Lukas paled slightly, his brows furrowing. Focusing on the positives had always worked before--but it wasn't working now. He wouldn't change his mind--but he was still held down by the notion that he was sacrificing that many people just for the life of one. A sudden thought came to him and shook him to his core--somewhere, out there, there was some other brother trying to protect his sister--both of whom were about to be blasted to all hell by orbital cannons. His shoulders seemed to droop slightly, and he spoke again, "Let's...talk about somezhing else." His voice came out quiet, not holding as much power behind it as he would have liked--he simply didn't want to deal with the world right now. He knew that he still had his headphones draped around his neck from earlier, and he wanted nothing more than to just fix those right over his ears and drown everything out. Jo's screams, Charles' snide remarks, the imminent fate of everyone outside the prison--everything. This was a means to an end--an end which he knew was absolutely necessary--but a means that he was having trouble coming to terms with.

Charles` sadistic response to her pleads tore another cry from Jo`s lungs, as she made another attempt at thrashing free from the seemingly tighter restraints-- this wasn`t worth it. Blow after blow after blow had torn through the faculties of her mind, and any willpower she may have prided herself in prior had crashed away long ago. "I... hate...!" Her words came out in pain-sullied and ragged bursts of air, and her throat proved far too scratched and dry to complete the full sentence. Everything was crashing around her- the truth was no where near the truth she had thought she found in No Man`s Land. No amount of crushing grief or despair she had experienced before was on par with the realization that humanity was broken, flawed-- and worst of all, unfixable. This realization took the filled feeling from her chest, and the fire from her eyes- she wasn`t afraid anymore, her pained neutrality betrayed a very... melancholy acceptance.
What she had devoted her life to was null and void. The people she held dear began to lose their significance, in the end they were all a part of the same monstrosity- capable of worse misdeeds than the evillest of immortal witches... This realization, instead of fuel a desire for change-- extinguished any remaining desire she had left. It wasn`t worth it, to devote yourself fully to something-- only to die unfulfilled as ever. She had never been so close to begging for death before, begging for release-- but there wasn`t a soul around good enough to grant her such a wish...
Despite this- the images that contorted the screens still flashing before her made her blood run cold. Her eye stretched open wider, jaw unhinging in a look of utter horror. The visuals before her meshed into an even more modern setting, the likes of which she had seen but weeks ago- and soon enough, she was staring right at the tattered remains of Carrion Land. Crushed, it`s former self scattered among the sand below. That image seemed to stick a bit longer- just in time for Jo to see a large swarm of Vultures swoop down freely, like paper airplanes barreling against the harsh and cold wings-- they perched themselves among the destruction, pecking down at the corpses that peeked out between the crevices of collateral.
She tried to rasp out someone`s name, it wasn`t clear whose-- but all that effort earned was a half-choked sob, the tears that had previously dried bubbling from her eye again. This time, there was no omnipotent rage this fueled- nothing but unconquerable grief.
She slacked- if not for the machinery keeping her in place, her head would have dropped. Somehow, she didn`t feel... caught off guard, or surprised. All the people she had failed to save prior... all those lives lost... this felt almost like some sort of retribution. There was no disbelief that followed, even as she watched her comrades fall one by one- Buddi, slashed to bits and pieces; Bunny, so desperate for release that she shot herself dead in the chest; Elliot, whom she had previously thought she had led to his death just like the rest of them, with a sad smile on his face as he was crushed by the caving base. The girl she had valued as her own flesh and blood, as her own daughter, Ivy-- was, again, gone. And this time, there was no convoluted super villain to restore her. The man who kept her pace as she dashed toward a better tomorrow, the living wall between her and madness, Ryder-- dead. She didn`t regret, didn`t curse herself or any one villain-- it felt inevitable. Why wouldn`t they all die...? There was no reason for them to live... not in this world, not as members of this race.
Even after having reached that conclusion, her own involuntary response didn`t cease- it was clear that she had stopped caring about what she looked like to others, as she rocked through her grief with quiet sobs. But, that didn`t mean she didn`t listen as Charles spoke.
Jo`s sudden silence grew unsettling-- or, at least, it would have, should she have been in the company of an average human.
Her lips parted, but nothing escaped her-- no sound, no air. To Jo, her struggles had just gained vacant meanings-- and Charles` offer was a dim light in a dark tunnel that reaked of slaughter and humanity`s foul nature. This was a chance...
With nothing to lose and seemingly nothing to gain, there wasn`t a single influence on Jo`s decision but her own self. "I`ll do it..." She murmured, her voice a sad husk of it`s typical barking volume. "Grant... me my means... and I`ll... give you ends. I need to do this..."

Charles rose an eyebrow to Smile, truly he was a survivalist, an idiot would have gotten himself killed at this point "Very well... sooooo-" it seemed as if Charles was leading to something. Knowing him, it'd either be something horrifically offensive or just plain horrible "Your sister probably doesn't live in Canada... right...?" it was now clear what region of this planet Charles was going to wipe of the planet first now.
CP-02 couldn't help but smile like none other as Jo made it abundantly apparent... she was ready. The time of deliverance had come "Of course..." Charles waved his hand to the console, and the images stopped, instead they had been replaced with some sort of UI system, full control of Paladin's satellite system like none other. Charles placed a hand on Jo's shoulder as he then spoke "This satellite system... or at least its beginnings... they were created to watch over the people... and over time they would become the weapon of deliverance we need. Unfortunately... old Charles Paladin was quick to make sure his CP units couldn't harness the full power of this weapon..." Charles had made sure to make the full weapon control system usable to human beings, not machines. It became apparent that even in death, Charles Paladin was careful to make sure this scenario would never play out... he tried his hardest to make sure his creations never used such a weapon to its fullest extent. Charles then continued to explain the situation "I can use about 10% of the network... but in the hands of a human..." the console suddenly scanned Jo's eye as her restraints were released, then her skull, and it continued to scan her entire body. Just as CP had said... there was security on this machine... security in place to keep his own creations at bay "What he never would have predicted is a human being agreeing to our methods... which I'm sure we have plenty of..." CP then tipped his hat over his eyes... it was more than that. His smile wiped off from his face, there was a long pause, he had come a long way. The time had finally come "And I have been looking for you for a long time..." he muttered "I... I need someone to agree with my methods... I need a human being that sees the world I do... A HORRIBLE CRUEL PLACE IN NEED OF ORDER!" CP began to twitch somewhat, his hands quaked uncontrollably "People like Tate and Smile... they agree to my methods for selfish reasons... I WON'T ALLOW SOMEONE LIKE THAT WIELDING THIS WEAPON! NO... I NEED A JUST HUMAN BEING!" he yelled, finally removing his hand from Jo's shoulder as he began to pace around the room "Years ago... The Mistress enacted 'Heritage for The Future'... a plan to find a human strong enough to lead this world in an effort to create a global power for humanity to recover from the Cataclysm. WEAK! WEAK! WEAK! We are too long gone to simply bring in a petty tyrant...!!!" and of course... we all know who that tyrant actually was "Jade Fentom was selected... everything about him... down to his motivations and mannerisms were analyzed... and through subtle manipulation... we lead him down his path..." this wouldn't be news to Jo, in fact, Hal had said the same thing to the girl "I could NEVER accept that... NonononoNOOO! So I decided to create my counter-agent to the disease that Xiu had given power to..." Charles finally stopped pacing, and slowly he looked to Jo. It would become readily apparently just what had gone one "You. Just as Jade was studied... so were you... your past... your motivations... everything. I decided that you were a just individual... not unlike Charles Paladin... almost exactly like him... so I order Shirley to watch over you... take you up as one of the elite... become the best of the best... and you didn't disappoint." the scanning finally concluded, and Jo had no been given complete access to Charles Paladin's entire orbital arsenal "Of course... you were sent out before you were truly ready... Dr. Innsmouth's tampering no doubt... not that it worked... nonetheless you impressed..." Vulture Team, the various enemies she had managed to defeat, she excelled expectations "With Xiu's first plan scrapped... she believed she was forced to go about using Heavenly Treasure again... I made sure she would never do that... and now here we are..." Charles opened his arms wide, and for a few moments he seemed to take on the mannerisms of a divine being, as he truly saw himself. In his mind, he was the angel, here to bring deliverance to all of mankind "Now do you understand!? You were chosen from the very beginning... ONLY YOU CAN DO THIS!" yes, if Jo believed in this, Charles would have to. Charles Paladin would have agreed to his methods for sure...!

As Charles asked his next question, Lukas stared at the man for a moment, his eyes widening just slightly, opening his mouth to speak, but finding that at first, no sound came out. He hesitated for a moment, then finally swallowed the lump in his throat and managed to speak,
"I...I thought zhat you knew vhere she vas...? Or you vere going to find out, or--..." Lukas had assumed that Charles had already found out where his sister was located--maybe moved her to somewhere safe until Lukas himself was done working. But this question was...did Charles really not know where she was, or was he just trying to get a rise out of him? Still, the idea that Astrid's location might be unknown when orbital cannons were about to decimate the world struck an actual pang of terror into Lukas' heart. Lukas had worked for years to eliminate his fears--but the loss of his sister was the one fear that he had never been able to conquer. "I...I don't know...I'm assuming zhat she's probably still in North America somevhere...after ve got separated, I don't know vhere she vent..." He had to stay calm. Panicking here wouldn't do anything for him. Jo's screaming had ceased, leaving for a moment an unsettling silence in the hall. "...Ve can find her...right?" That question came with a good dose of trepidation over the answer. Charles was going to keep good on his word...he had to...there was no way that he couldn't...

Jo let out a long, ragged exhale of pure relief that she hadn`t realized she was holding once the images stopped flashing. The emotions built bubbling in her chest and pumping throughout her body began to die down, her mind slowly tumbling to a stop in it`s activity. Her muscles fell slightly limp-- her mind still refused to process the situation. Or, at least-- process it any further than doing what she had to do.
Charles` hand fell upon her shoulder, and she jumped, visibly tensing. Despite her spiked terror, she listened to each and every word he had to say-- far too exhausted mentally and emotionally to truly process it. The world of gray she had established and so greatly prided herself in was being broken down, repainted back into black and white-- the world was rotten, and full of rotten people. Tears still ran down her face, from the sheer crushing grief that weighed down on her unlike it ever had before-- everything she had fought for was dead. All that was left was bad, bad, bad-- and finally, she was the messiah to cleanse it all away... This time, there was no drive or passion involved in the action-- it was just something she needed to do...
And if anything could further cement that in Jo`s head-- it was what Charles had to say next.
She didn`t question what was scanning her form, but carefully watched the scanner with interest as it moved down her body-- then the restraints unsnapped. With her limbs released, and with no strength left to claw at her throat or raise her head or even to writhe like a worm on a hook as brain cells began to die, Jo dangled slack off the chair and directly onto her hands and knees. She hyperventilated, a hand upon her collarbone as if intended to soothe the rough expulsions from her lungs-- and through her panicked, broken pants, she listened.
Sight focused down on the ground, she didn`t blink nor speak- in fact, it seemed she had lost her capability for blinking, her eyes puffed and permanently bloodshot. Still, after moderately collecting herself, she picked her head up just enough so she could defeatedly stare at Charles, whom had been declaring that the original Charles had predicted that no human alive would go through with these plans-- and Jo had begun to wonder if perhaps she wasn`t human. She knew she was about to crush the lives of millions. No human was capable of such a thing... no human would stoop so low, break so hard.
Charles continued, and slowly- the grief began to burn from her eye, which twitched open just the slightest bit wider at the explanation given.
Everything up until now had been an elaborate chess came between Charles and Xiu-- Jade was Xiu`s chess piece, and Jo belonged to Charles. Once Charles suddenly paused in his pacing, stopping to look her dead in the eye-- she refused to meet his gaze, her sight automatically flicking down, wide terrified eyes staring at the steel exterior under her.
Of all the men and women around her, she had been chosen... reality was a discarded concept to her at this point-- this must have been a work of fate. Something drew her forward, something dangled in front of her-- she didn`t know how to explain it.
She stared up at the console, expression some odd mix of confused, petrified, and... pleasantly awe-struck. She had never felt so full, so complete-- all this new information filled a long emptied hole in her chest. Since she had begun this mission, this beautiful journey to bring deliverance to all of mankind-- she had slowly begun to feel like a full human being again, like some divine purpose had at last been realized...
Slowly, she staggered up onto her feet-- a full, lopsided grin of absolute bliss contorting her face. Tears continued to roll down her cheeks from her bloodshot eyes, however- some part of Jo realized what was happening.
"...D-Did...I ever tell you... why I joined Paladin...?" Each word came out in a harsh discharge of air ripping from her throat, choked and strangled. Her legs seemed to move on their own, moving her toward the console like a fly drawn to a light-- the rest of her slacked, arms limply dangling at her sides. "...It was... because I just... I r-really wanted to die..." Her head drooped on it`s own, that off-kilter grin that seeped manic happiness never once twitching off her features. "I couldn`t do it on my own, no... no, that was for cowards... I... I couldn`t... leave..." She stopped directly in front of the console, empty sight glazed over it`s contents. "S-So... I thought... why... don`t I die like a hero...? Why don`t I... I just... die..." She choked back a sob, taking in everything before her, and feeling enormously overwhelmed... This was the first time she had said any of this information to anyone or anything-- when she joined Paladin, she was looking for a hand in her own suicide. Saying out loud, now of all times-- it made her tremble, her sobbing become something more erratic. "B-But, no--! Nonononono... I can`t... I can`t die yet...! I-Imagine... if I died... how m-much longer... everyone would... suffer... I-I just... didn`t know it then." She lifted her head, looking at the screen before her as she desperate tried to relit the fire in her eyes-- all that came were more tears, her lip quivering with each whimper. "B-But... now I understand...! Humanity just... doesn`t know better...! It... needs my help... so, I`m going to help... it. I... am their savior... no one else... where injustice exists, I`ll... I`ll be there...! I`ll fix it...!"
Her sight trained on the panel before her.
Here was the power to kill billions of innocent people.
Her hand trembled as it glided above the touch screen, her breathing unstable and her tears quickening. The room around her seemed to contort, bend and mode about wildly-- she couldn`t think, couldn`t see, all she knew was that this needed to happen...!
Humanity needed a savior... it needed a beacon of hope...! This... it wasn`t genocide. It was... release. The world was dying, and she-- was saving them all from it. She was a savior... a messiah... humanity was begging for her help, looking at her with wide pleading eyes--
For an instant, she swore she processed the glint of metal scissors in front of her. She could feel her shaking hands clenched around it, rusted metal clanging together as she slowly rose her arms, ready to plunge down--
Before she knew it, her mind was no longer in the moment, but reliving a nightmare. Her hands moved quickly over the mechanical surface, canons locked onto a region commonly referred to as 'Canada'-- then, she fired.
The ground shook. The entire city shook. The whole world shook, from the impact that was thousands upon thousands of orbital canons crashing down and annihilating 34.88 million people. All that-- was caused by her. She could hear their screams and pleads from here, rippling through her mind as she stared downward, pupils shrunk. She stared ahead, with a look that went for miles, almost disturbingly neutral... until what looked like horror and realization contorted her facial muscles, still not removing the strained and enchanted grin that pulled her lips up forcibly.
She crumbled onto the ground, hands still sitting atop the panel and knees impacting roughly below. She hyperventilated- in, out, in, out, in out-- then choked, and let her head rest against the cool metal of the console, quiet whimpers and sobs escaping her as she rocked through her grief.

Charles gave Smile a reassuring smile "I was simply teasing! I jest! I jest! Hahahaha! No worries Smile... your sister is safe, and more importantly not in Canada! Your sister is safe and being delivered to this city as we speak! No worries... you should know more than anyone else... I am a businessman! As long as you give me what I want, I will give you what YOU want! Understood...? Rejoice...! You will see your sister soon enough!" Charles then looked back over to the center of Floor 0 where Jo and CP-02 were "It is done..." he muttered as small drones began to gather around Charles and Smile.
"Yes Jo... I know..." Charles replied solemnly as the bluenette explained her reasoning for joining Paladin. In a different world, she'd have gotten herself killed, but the world, god, and more importantly Charles had plans for her. The man gave a warm smile to Jo, completely ignoring the fact that she had become an unstable mess "Now... now give deliverance to the poor souls... rapture has come Josephine... it is finally time to be judged! KILL THEM ALL... let god sort em' out!" and the man simply watched with interest as Jo then commenced to wipe out millions. An untold amount of innocent had just died from a mere minute, and Charles was simply ecstatic. He could tell, CP... the collective, the satellites, they were all the same entity... and they had all seen millions get wiped out in no time at all. Charles yet again placed a hand on Jo's shoulder "You've done it... now..." Charles then abruptly swatted Jo's hands "Let's not get ahead of ourselves here... that was just a test run... I wasn't even sure this would work... but now that I know it does... its time to spread my word to the masses... after all Josephine... No Man's Land is our Ark to save us from the Flood... and our little animals must know their fate..." small flying drones began to surround the two as they all began to scan Jo and Charles. Charles looked over to Jo, smiling to her "Now Jo... smile... you're talking to the whole city now...."

Lukas let out an audible sigh of relief as he heard that Astrid was in fact on her way to the prison. It was as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders--or rather, a fraction of the burden that was the internal dilemma that he now found himself facing. He was wondering why Charles seemed so fixated on Canada--but that was when suddenly, everything seemed to shake, and in that moment, he knew--Canada had apparently just met with a grisly fate.
Lukas didn't know what to think. Almost as if on a self-defense reflex, he immediately tried to numb himself to the nature of the loss the world had just experienced. There was no other choice, he told himself. He couldn't have stopped it even if he'd tried. And, on top of that, his sister was going to be there soon. Even if nobody ever looked at him the same way--even if Jasper or Rommel never forgave him--even if he didn't have any of the companions he had surprisingly found himself warming up to--he'd at least have Astrid. And that was all that he needed. This was what he presented to himself as the truth, doing all he could to reassure himself that as long as Astrid was safe, nothing else mattered.
As the drones began to gather around them and he heard Charles speak, Lukas looked to the man, asking hesitantly,
"Vhat are zhese for...?"

Charles eyes' widened as the screen in front of him and Jo suddenly shifted into a CGI video of a small child "What-?" and the man quite literally seemed to panic. Someone hacked him... someone quite literally managed to hack him... and... it was terrifying in his own eyes. Absolute despair took over his body, even an AI like himself could feel it... the feeling that he wouldn't be able to accomplish what he had been born for. The idea that he would fail... unthinkable. But then he realized... no... no one was as good as him. CP-02 opened a connection to the collective, he'd be able to undo the hack in one hour. One hour and he'd have control again "Heh... no worries... they'll be back under my control soon enough!" Charles boasted as he looked to Jo "This is but a minor inconvenience! They're grasping at straws out of desperation is all! They don't' understand! But soon they will..."
The CP unit with Charles poked one of the floating drones, before looking back to him "Oh they're just cameras... back ups if you will... I was making an announcement with Josephine... of course I was rudely interrupted but it was only a minor setback. Now..." CP looked to the entrance as he began to back away from it "I'm going to be blunt here sir... the former squad is on its way... I can see them now. So get ready. There is no chance for failure. Fail and you die, and you'll never see your sister again..." he then completely backed away as other CP-units of greater power took his place.

Jo`s smile dropped the moment the camera was off her- a hand quickly flew over her mouth, her sight flickering back to the control panel she had just used. She`d have to do it again... millions, and millions of people... all dead, because of her...
What Charles was saying now was hardly registering with her- she felt so lightheaded and heavy and sick, she couldn`t focus- the sudden urge to puke was near overwhelming, she had never felt so fullheartedly disgusted before... she was beginning to wonder when it was she`d run out of tears, almost sure her ragged and violent sobs were audible on the video feed as Charles spoke to the city-- but soon enough, that recording came to a complete stop.
Jo`s hand slowly fell to her side, eyes opening just a bit wider as she watched the sudden CGI fluffy-haired little girl whom took the place of their video feed. "...Ah..." She murmured, actually a bit unsure what to think of this... It was... bad, wasn`t it--? This-- this thing was interfering with their plans. They didn`t understand... how much longer they were prolonging all that suffering...
Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her expression not changing much at all- as she came to that realization, however, she came to a separate one-- this girl was... familiar...? Not... overly familiar, no-- but her heart swelled with relief and unwelcome joy as she took in the little brunette`s visage. She didn`t smile still, just stared, lost and confused over her involuntary emotions-- and then as Charles suddenly spoke up, boasting- Jo jumped, almost having forgotten he was there. "R-Right..." She mumbled in response, voice and body still shaking from nerves and panic-- what if that didn`t work...? What would they do then...? "Shouldn`t we... have some sort of backup plan...?"

Charles slowly turned to Jo, giving her a warm smile "Oh... we don't need a back-up plan... why should we compromise... true justice can only be done in one way... if we did something else, we wouldn't be doing what was necessary... no... we will not stoop to Xiu's level... there is one way and only one way to do this!" Charles looked over to the screens, changing them from the CGI video of Chelsea to a security feed of the walls... the guardsmen had left the base, terrified of him no doubt. Some of the cameras pointed outside of the base spotted a small group of familiar characters "Oh dear..." and yet, before Charles could lift a finger, the entrance to Floor 0 was literally blown open. A dull expression showed on Charles' face "I wish they hadn't done that..." he muttered.
From the blown open entrance of Floor 0, a familiar masked assassin walked in, cocking his rifle as he pointed it inside "Alright... where's Jo...?" Nathan muttered, looking out towards the room, seeing Smile, and a whole slew of CP units, many of which looked a great deal more imposing than he imagined an army of Charles being. Nathan almost immediately shot a glare towards Smile "Move out of the way or you get shot." he abruptly spoke to the German, trailing his rifling down towards his former comrade.

Emilia came in, with a new lance. Since entering again she looked for a new weapon to help her fight, along with grabbing a couple of other things. Though Emilia was going to take it easy this time around. She wasn't in good shape exactly. "Blowing it up... Totally necessary." Emilia said with a smirk. She couldn't wait to get her revenge on those Robots, but most of all... She couldn't wait to see if Jo could be reasoned with. Feeling like the world was collapsing on Emilia, she didn't want to waste time with Smile. "I think the best people to deal with him are the one's with masks, or are just plain faster then him since of his cybernetics." Emilia said as she looked at Smile.

Three CP units from the batch almost immediately walked forward upon the explosion rumbling Floor 0 "Mere children here to whine... that's all they are. We will deal with this..." one of them spoke to Smile as they all walked past them. There was CP-17, a monstrosity of a machine, standing nearly 8 feet tall and in heavy armor. Then there were CP-05 and 06, one unit seemed to be holding a large rifle of some kind, while the other was unarmed but had a peculiar design that the others lacked. Above all else, these were not the typical power suit CP units that the squad had faced earlier. These seemed to be individuals, on par with what CP-02 seemed to be, they were variants of the standard CP unit. CP-17 immediately pointed an arm out towards Emilia, after which about a dozen rockets all flew out from it towards her. The other two units charged out towards Rommel and Zombie, with the unarmed one leading. Nathan, almost immediately started to back up, firing a few rounds into the CP units... only for his bullets to effortlessly ricochet off its armor "Oh shit oh shit-..!" he nervously called out.

Jasper arrived just behind the rest of Suicide Squad, frowning as he saw the CP units and Smile guarding the way. He had hoped they wouldn't run into Smile. He really didn't like the thought of having to fight him either- out of the people he was even just beginning to care for, Smile was near the top of the list, and the thought of hurting him... Quietly, he wondered if he might be able to sneak his way past the CP units and Smile but he had no doubts the German, if nobody else, would see him- he likely knew his tactics, and if he still supported Charles, then... The white-haired male took a deep breath before creeping along the edge of the room, eyes scanning the others as he tried to sneak around without being seen. Even if it ended up not working, the attempt was worth it either way.

As the other Charles bots began to gather, and the man stated that the rest of the Suicide Squad were going to be coming, Lukas quickly began checking his belt to make sure that he had himself prepared for battle. For some reason, his heart was racing, threatening to beat out of his chest--this wasn't a battle that he wanted to fight. Soon enough, the members of the squad began to arrive--and Lukas saw that they were quick to begin figuring out how to defeat him. This...honestly surprised him a bit. While Rommel did seem to show some signs of remorse...Zombie and Emilia showed none. That made sense, though...he had known that those two had never liked him, anyway. He didn't matter to them--he was just another bag of meat in the way of their goals. Well, if they were going to think like that--then so was he. Astrid was worth a hundred of those two each.
"Nobody is going to be 'dealing' vith me..." he spoke in a low voice in a response to Emilia as the CP units began to move in around him. He let those units move around him, taking in a deep breath. Jasper wasn't here yet--and Lukas figured that he would avoid attacking Rommel for now. Zombie and Emilia, though...they were free game. Lukas took a few steps forward, extending both of his arms out, needles firing out from the cybernetics in either arm, barreling towards the blonde marksman, hoping that they would meet their mark somewhere on Zombie. " 'Oh shit' is right...! I'm not letting you get in zhe vay of me getting to my sister...!"
It was then that Lukas saw a flash of white hair across the room--Jasper had arrived. He felt his throat tighten a bit, but he quickly grit his teeth, averting his eyes back to Zombie in hopes that one of the CP units would deal with Jasper.

He ran up to the CP units and brandished his claws, slashing at the unarmed one fast and furious. He wanted to see if how defensive they were, he wasn't expecting this to work at all...if it did, that would be awesome though.

Nathan saw Rommel take the heat from the two CP units, a grin appeared on his face "Well.. he's definitely reliable... you can never take that away..." Zombie commented as he held his rifle tight to his chest. He could never manage to do harm to any of these insane robot android Charles clones... his best luck with be with Smile or Jo. Intent on getting this done quickly, Nathan decided to go for Jo. He tried his best to sneak away, only for some of Smile's needs to zoom past his arm, cutting some skin off "Sh- jesus-!" Nathan immediately looked over to Smile, aiming his rifle down towards the German "You batshit crazy German! Look... I know you have someone important... but your sister ain't worth the whole world Smile... now quit it before I shoot you, because I swear I will!" he hadn't quite pulled the trigger yet, he was hesitating, in his own mind he knew he was being weak, yet he didn't want to pull the trigger. CP-05 rushed towards Eagle to throw a single, powerful punch, only for Rommel's own attack to stop him in his tracks. Eagle's claws made dents in the armor, they did minimal damage, but it was clear that it would take a hell of a lot more slashes to do some serious damage. CP-05 them fought back by simply grabbing Rommel's arms, it had incredible strength, enough power to make it a real struggle for even Rommel to break free. As this happened, CP-06 dashed around the two, aiming its rifle towards Rommel's back and opening fire "Target acquired, Eliminate!"

CP-02`s smile sent a spike of terror crawling under Jo`s skin- she briefly offered her own shaky, fearful smile in response, only to drop it a moment later. She listened, nodding and pretending she understood- only for Chelsea`s image to disappear off the screens a moment later. This told Jo that Charles was once again at least in partial control of the machinery- and she cringed, psyche plummeted right back into panic as she came to the slow realization that time was passing-- she`d have to wipe out another country. She leaned up against the console for support, hyperventilating raggedly as she stared down at the floor with wide, far gone eyes-- only for an explosion to pull her out of her thoughts, spiking her panic.
"H-Hadn`t d--?!" Jo gasped out, trying to process what Charles had said- before whirling back around toward the console, watching the video feed on them. The Suicide Squad had just broken into Floor 0-- she whipped right back around again, watching them from the transparent protection Cell 0 supplied. She couldn`t see them through all the bots that had stormed in to stop them all... but, she kept toward the center of the room, where she`d be the safest- just in case. "Wh-Why are they..." Were they really that blind...? She had tried to explain to them, tried to explain to everyone-- that as horrid as her actions were, they were in the name of the greater good. Humanity couldn`t fix itself... it needed a nudge in the right direction...! They should have been honored, to be chosen as their God`s Ark-- they should realize that this was all for the better. For a peaceful tomorrow, they could all share together... She didn`t want to have to kill them-- she was doing this for them, and their children, and their children`s children. If only they understood...

Jasper kept most of his attention on Smile and the others near him, expecting the brunette to expect him of stealth more than the robotic units assisting him- but as he saw the slightest glance his way, followed by the German looking away... He felt a flutter of hope. Maybe there was still a chance after all...? Quickly and quietly, the male edged back to the back part of the area, sliding slowly past all the robots- before making a break down the long hallway he found, darting into the shadows as quick as he could. Had he really just snuck by unseen...? He could hardly believe it- but he wasted no time marveling over it. Instead, he rushed down the hallway, muttering soft pleading things under his breath- and when finally he reached the cell where Jo and the main Charles' AI was, he stopped. He simply watched for a moment, then hurried closer, yanking his mask off after a moment. "Jo-!! Jo, oh my god..." He didn't even know what to say- but the sight of the blunette in person did something to calm him some. Surely, he could talk her out of this madness, or even just convince her to come closer- he would knock her out if need be but he wanted to do all he could to avoid allowing her to be killed. He couldn't handle it if she were killed... "JO!!!" he yelled, trying to get her attention now as he waved at her frantically, hoping she'd pay attention to him before the Charles bot inside tried to murder him, or called others to do the job.

He rose it up to her level, shoving it towards the bluenette "Jo... you know what needs to be done..." he looked back to Jasper, a smile on his face that seemed to be mocking him "Eliminate those who stand in your way."

"That's right! FUCK IT! Shove death RIGHT BACK in the reapers FACE!"
Eagle's Theme- Fury's Wrath
Eagle looked at the dents. Those weren't going to cut it. He had to figure out a weak point, something that could break them down and kill them fast. When they clenched onto his arms, he looked and started to struggle. Then the rifle. "Oh shi-!" he ducked at the last possible second, hopefully pulling the robot down with him, hoping those rifle shots would hit the other guy, and he could escape.
