Paragons: Mad Science (Sky y Pan)

His name was Professor Photon, Professor Edgar E. Photon. He was a genius scientist who revolutionized the world in the 20th century, an adventurer, and a hero. A man whom created the first AI whilst travelling the world stopping alien invasions, a man considered "The Most Brilliant There Ever Was". Considered to have one of the most honored and successful lives ever lived, he was still nonetheless human. In 2005, he founded a university for the most brilliant minds on earth. However, he would only managed to take on a single class before he passed: 12 students. 12 students that would later become the 12 most brilliant men and women on earth. After the death of Professor Photon, his twelve students each broke off and began to work on their own.

It has been 10 years since the death of Professor Photon. This is the story of 2 of Professor Photon's 12 students.

And a nazi dinosaur.

1945, Somewhere in Germany

Deep in the German countryside, there was a hidden underground facility responsible for developing new weapons of mass destruction for the Nazis. By 1945, the war was all but won by the Allies, Hitler knew that they could no longer win a traditional war. The fate of the 3rd Reich was in the hands of a band of mad scientists responsible for developing a new weapon to defeat the allies. And so, for the last few months, they had not so much as left the bunker. Their fatherland needed them, and if they were to fail, America and more importantly Russia would be knocking at their door steps. Their early V-2 rockets were not going to end the war, they had researched into powerful super soldiers and tanks the size of cities, but Nazi Germany simply did not have the funding or manpower to carry out these projects anymore. No, they had only one option left now. The Third Reich would not look into the future, they would look into the past!

"Is it ready?" Chief Scientist Gunther asked his team from the observation chamber. He had been appointed the new leader scientist a year ago after the previous head of science defected a year ago, Gunther was as nationalistic as it got, and prideful. He truly believed himself to be last hope for Germany, and he had no doubt he would succeed in saving it. Alongside him were his three best scientists: Dr. Hildagard, Rowlf, and Edison. Dr. Hildagard was an older woman, most notable for a permanent scowl on her face and an eyepatch. The entire war she had been seeking to create a super soldier serum to build an army of perfect soldiers. Sadly for her, the funding was never there and her research was sabotaged by her contemporaries. Dr. Rowlf was somewhat of a strange sight to behold, a brain in a jar, he was more machine than man at this point. Though somewhat terrifying in presence, he the only individual of the four with no loyalty to Hitler. He despised Nazis, but a series of unfortunate events in his life had led him to this point. Lastly, there was Thomas Edison, whom had defected from the US to assist Hitler. The man was a shadow of his former self, literally. He was practically a zombie at this point, he had to be in his 90s by this point, possibly even past a century old. However, his science had kept him alive long past the age where his life should have ended.

"We're all green Herr Gunther, bring in the test subject..." Dr. Rowlf replied to the Chief Scientist. All four of them, alongside their staff, looked into the chamber that the observation room was overlooking. Slowly, the doors into the chamber opened as one man entered the room. He was tall, blonde, muscular, with blue eyes... upon simply looking at the man, it would not be uncommon for you to surmise he was the Aryan Superman that Hitler talked so much about. He appeared, by all means, to be the perfect specimen. This was Alfred Hellfern, German soldier and war hero. Responsible for holding off entire armies on his own, he was viewed as the pinnacle of Aryan genetics by the Nazis. And he was chosen to be the test subject for this experiment, the last hope for Germany!

"This is it gentlemen-" Gunther spoke with a sinister grin "This is the day we turn the tide of the war and secure our glorious fatherland's future. Tonight, we create the ultimate weapon. Herr Hellfern... please step into the pod... we are going to make history here tonight!" and so the soldier followed his orders as any good soldier would. The chamber shut closed around the man as the crew in the observation room began to pull the necessary levers to get the contraption working. You could hear the machine letting out some sort of noise, it began to glisten with a beautiful light "YES! YES! THIS IS IT! WE HAVE DONE IT! WE HAVE SAVED GERMANY!" Gunther yelled triumphantly as the very chamber began to shake from the immense power contained within the chamber. Eventually, the process came to an end, and the chamber stopped shaking. The entire crew and every single scientist in the room had their eyes solely focused on the chamber. This was it, this was the moment they were all looking for, the chamber opened and...

Nothing was there.

No weapon of mass destruction. No Hellfern. Not even a sausage. There was just nothing there.

The entire crew was silent in disbelief, many of them just struck with sheer confusion of what just happened. This continued until one of them broke the silence.

"We are FUCKED!" Dr. Hildagard yelled angrily, immediately punching one of the crew in the gut "WHAT THE FUCK MAN!? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED!?"

"Hildagard calm down we-" Edison tried to speak up only for his words to be stopped by Hildagard's continued yelling.

"NO! NO! You don't get it! Don't you have any idea what just happened!? THAT WAS OUR FUCKING MEAL TICKET WE JUST INCINERATED!"

"It could be worse-" Edison replied only to get stares from both Hildagard and Gunther.

"We just fucking turned a war hero into literal nothingness dude-" Hildagard replied, Gunther nodding behind her, still without words.

"I do not get it... you can't just turn something into complete nothingness..." Rowlf spoke up "Our readings show that not even Herro Hellfern's particles remain... there isn't even a trace of his existence...."

"What are you getting at...?" Gunther finally spoke, Hildagard simply saying "We're boned-" in the background because she felt the need to be part of this conversation.

"I do not know..." Dr. Rowlf spoke, the brain still looking at the readings of the chamber from his panel "I simply... do not... know..."

The clock by the door ticked closer and closer to midnight, yet its movements went unobserved. The room held many, much more interesting items, after all. Cabinets full of mysteriously colored and hastily labeled chemicals lined the walls, and various glass containers were neatly stored alongside them. Test tubes, beakers, and flasks of differing sizes took up room, both along the walls and in baskets near the center of the room. Along one wall, there were several bookshelves, both with science encyclopedias and discussions and notebooks, hand written dates and subjects on their spines. There was a sort of messy organization to the place - it was clear, the one who owned the lab knew where things were, but a stranger might struggle to find anything.
The sole occupant of the lab, a woman who appeared to be in her late twenties, was seemingly unaffected by the passing of time as the clock finally struck midnight - she was focused entirely on the small row of test tubes before her. She took a deep breath as she dropped a clear liquid into each tube, watching for results - and upon gathering that her test had done nothing, she groaned and pushed her goggles to the top of her head. Her hand instantly picked up a pencil from nearby, jotting down what she'd discovered in a notebook before rubbing her eyes.
Only then did she seem to realize how late it had become - she glanced at the clock, frowning softly, before closing her notebook. Perhaps it was time to clean up... She shot another look at the row of test tubes, disappointed by the result - before noticing something. Squinting, she peered closer... only to see one had tinted a slightly orange color. She perked up, then, quickly grinning as she picked up that tube and held it to the light. Sure enough, there was a light tint - and that meant progress. Quickly, she reopened her notebook, scribbling down her new findings. She should have known patience was key but she hadn't had good results nearly all day and it had frustrated her. Yet she'd felt sure she was getting closer with this last test, especially when an idea had suddenly hit her just a few hours before - and the lack of an immediate reaction had left her tempted to give up for the night. If she actually had made a break through, though... She settled the changed tube in a new holder and dripped more of the clear liquid into it, watching as the orange began to brighten and show more obviously.
"Yes! Oh I knew you'd be difficult but look at that! Nearly pure..." she breathed, setting the tube down. She grinned a little as she looked at it, before yawning - and deciding it was indeed time to pack up and go. She knew it could wait until tomorrow - now that she knew what to do, she could both see what time did to the drug and recreate it if something did happen. Quietly, she began to wash the unneeded test tubes, humming cheerily under her breath. Soon, she could head home and get some rest...

Ophelia gasped as she heard a crack of thunder outside, glancing up in shock. She hadn't quite expected it to storm - the forecast had been uncertain, yet still... After a moment, she seemed to relax, turning to clean the test tubes once more. She allowed herself to hum a soft tune, trying to calm her nerves - yet as her window slammed open, shoved hard by the wind, she shrieked and dropped her test tubes, at least two of them shattering in the sink. She placed her hand over her heart as she spun to look at the window, a chill running along her spine. Something didn't feel right... Slowly, she approached the window, a hand in her jacket as she peeked out - yet there was nothing there. Hesitantly, she pushed it closed and latched it - yet the anxiety wasn't fading.
The woman glanced around some, hurrying back to the sink and very carefully picking the shards of glass out, before tossing them in her broken glass container - she didn't mix it with normal trash, just to be safe. Once she'd dealt with that she returned to her cleaning, hands hurried as she tried to get this over with before paranoia overtook her.
Perhaps it was the drug...? She glanced at the vibrant orange liquid in the other test tube. She had been working hard to create a liquid form of fear and paranoia - and while she'd had mild results before... perhaps it released a gas, and it had affected her? She tried to focus on that possibility instead of anything else, yet her mind refused to agree. Someone was there. She could feel their eyes on her, feel them staring - and then they spoke.
The woman screamed and spun around, hand reaching into her coat hurriedly, though she didn't immediately attack. Instead, she stared, hand over her heart desperately. "W-who are you?" Her gaze twisted to the test tube beside her momentarily, pondering the possibility of hallucinations - before she looked to the man (was he even a man?) before her. He seemed, rather simply put... wrong. She stared at him and slowly removed her hand from her coat, a syringe with a lemon yellow liquid in it held in her hand. Why it was in a syringe as opposed to a test tube was unclear - yet she held it as if it would provide her protection, taking a deep breath as she tried to calm down. The figure had said they needed her help, after all... So perhaps she wasn't in danger, just yet?

Seeing the reaction earned by her screaming and fear, Ophelia allowed herself to calm slightly. He seemed just as shocked and frightened by her reaction as she was by his sudden appearance - and that... made her slowly set her syringe down. His words were met with a confused frown - she knew him...? Her eyes flickered across what she could of his form, wracking her memory - yet as he uncovered his face and told her his name, her eyes widened in shock. "Oh my god, Fritz-!" she gasped, nodding as he reminded her of them being classmates. Of course. Now, his face started to seem more familiar - though it had certainly changed since they had been in school together. "It's been so long, you've... you look different-" she murmured, expression shifting to a sort of gentle happiness. It had been so long since she'd seen her classmates - it was nice to see someone again.
As Fritz explained why he had come, though, her faint look of happiness faded. That... didn't sound good. Slowly, she stepped closer, placing a hand on his shoulder once she got close enough. Her gaze drifted over him, taking in the almost sickly look he had - before gently hugging him. "... I'll see what I can do, alright? A lot of what I've been working on lately has been dead ends, this is the first good thing in a while-" She pulled back and gestured at the test tube... before slapping his shoulder with a firm look. "Was sneaking in through the window and scaring me half to death really necessary though?!" Her frown only lasted a few seconds before she smiled again, taking a deep breath and glancing at her hands - slightly shaking. She knew why, could rather easily guess, but pushed it aside in favor of moving to lean against the counter.
"So... what problem are we looking at here?"

Ophelia just barely caught the trace of a smile, having been staring still to try and come to terms with the fact that her old friend (well, she considered him a friend at least) had changed so drastically. His thanks earned a soft shrug, but his apology caused her to grin a bit. "It's alright, you just startled me... at least I know the drug isn't producing gas-" she commented, picking up her notebook and flipping to a fresh page near the back. She began to write down the differences in him that seemed unnatural, noting the eerie feeling that came with being in his presence - before glancing up as he said he'd have to show her. She frowned a little, clearly confused, but nodded all the same. "Alright...? Go ahead and show me." She did her best to gather her courage, holding her breath as he seemed to be readying himself - and as he bared his teeth... it quickly became obvious what he'd intended her to see. Her hand scribbled words on the paper almost without need for her to look away, eyes wide in shock at the odd shape his teeth had taken. It was shocking, strange - and unsettling, seeing the blood that appeared to be there. "... W-well then-" she commented, slowly taking a deep breath to try and calm herself. It was frightening... yet Fritz wouldn't hurt her. She had faith in that. "... Anything you can tell me, specifics on what it's done beyond just appearances, how it happened - I'm... what caused this? That'd give me a place to start with something to fix it- I'll... I'll believe you, I promise," she said, trying to think rationally and scientifically... beyond just simple worry for someone she had once known who now seemed changed almost beyond recognition.

A grim smile traced across Ophelia's lips as she heard Ruthven's words, amused yet worried for him all the same... She allowed her eyes to drop to her notebook as she scribbled down what he told her, brows furrowing in concentration as she tried to think over her knowledge of chemistry into where she might begin to fix this. She... honestly wasn't sure. Yet she would try - especially as he mentioned being unable to eat food. She glanced up, then, and as he told her of his thirst for blood... she let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "... Have you... um... e-eaten-? More than once? I-if only once, how... how long until you couldn't stand it?" she asked, clearly uncomfortable and somewhat anxious about asking the questions - but on a science based standpoint... they were important. She tapped her pen on her notebook as she tried to think of solutions and ways to make his condition less difficult while she worked, pondering at least one possibility - and smiling as it seemed likely to work. "... A-are they..." She glanced up, obviously guessing given the blood that had been in his mouth that he had already fed. Yet... had the victim survived? Or was there a body out there in an alley? She wanted to ask yet it felt almost insensitive. If Ruthven had killed someone... he couldn't possibly be okay with it. And she didn't want to upset him, especially with how much distress he seemed to already be in. No - she wouldn't ask... but if he told her, she'd take note. She wasn't scared of him, per say... but what he had become, potentially. She didn't know how much control he truly had over his thirst for blood, and she found herself suddenly thankful she hadn't cut her hand on the broken glass earlier. Who knew what might have happened then, if that would have caused problems for him or not...

A frown formed on Ophelia's lips at the other's answer, and she slowly scribbled down what he'd said. That was a problem - somehow, they were going to have to feed him... without hurting anyone. She bit her lip as he apologized, able to tell it wasn't for her - he hadn't done anything to her. She bit her lip, but let the silence stand as she scribbled notes down, eventually flipping to a new page and beginning to write out a request for a needed substance for her tests. She seemed absorbed in her writing, handwriting elegant but clearly rushed as she scribbled out her intent - and then gasped as she felt a nearly icy hand clutching her arm. Her gaze shot up, eyes meeting Ruthven's. As she heard his question, she hesitated - but slowly nodded. Quietly, she twisted her notebook so he could see what she'd written - a request for bagged blood for tests. "... I'm not sure it'll help a lot, but we can try and see if that helps while I work on how to fix this... Do you-" She hesitated, before placing her hand over his. "... Do you feel cold? C-can you tell, or..." She flipped to the previous page in her book and wrote another note, before looking to Ruthven gently. "... I'll see what I can do to stop this, okay?"

Ophelia bit her lip, looking to Ruthven worriedly a moment before nodding in response to his words. Clearly, he was upset by this - but with how late it was, she wasn't sure what she could do before morning... She finished writing up notes on his condition, allowing him to pace a little before glancing up as he spoke. The fact that he couldn't tell made her bit her lip, a little sad - but she quickly and rather vehemently pushed that emotion aside. She didn't need that. She forced herself to focus as her companion began to explain how this had happened, scribbling notes frantically - and she grew hopeful as he said it was a lab accident. Perhaps that'd make it easier to combat? She knew the chemical compositions for treatments for plenty of the diseases he'd probably been working with by memory - those that had treatments, at least. As she realized how upset he seemed, though, she slumped, worrying her lip with her teeth before letting out a slow breath as he said it had burned. "... I... I'm sorry..." she murmured, giving him a sympathetic look, before taking a deep breath and looking to her notebook. "I know this might be hard, but I need to know which diseases it was. I'm not going to recreate it, I promise, but that might be where to start to get rid of this - knowing what you were using and trying to combat the specific diseases..."

Ruthven's silence was worrying. Ophelia gazed at him quietly as she waited for a response, biting her lip - and as he explained that he didn't know, she sighed under her breath. That made her job a lot harder - yet as he spoke up about some of his notes surviving the fire, she perked up. "Yeah! That'd be super helpful!!" She grinned at him, then - before glancing at the clock. "... Tomorrow, though. It's storming and late and I need sleep to function like a proper scientist. We can go and check out the lab and see what's left over..." she murmured, setting her notebook down and yawning slightly as she started to realize how tired she was. "C'mon - we can head back to my place... this is just my lab, there's actual beds back home - though... the storm's gonna be great fun to navigate through-"

Ophelia grinned as Fritz seemed to brighten up, happy to see him looking less depressed - yet as he was reminded of sleep and seemed to quickly diminish again, she bit her lip. She didn't like seeing him upset - she almost considered her drugs... but no, those weren't supposed to be safe for humans yet. She couldn't let him know... even if he seemed to trust her with his biggest secret as of now. She hummed a bit as she got up, setting things into containers and putting them where they belonged before glancing over her shoulder as she heard his words. "Mhmm. It's warm and dry, after all, and with a storm this bad... that's just about all you need." She picked up a fresh notebook after a second of deliberation, taking it with her in case she needed to jot anything new down - yet as she saw Fritz stumbling into the wall, she rushed forward. "Hey, are you okay? Here..." Carefully, she looped her arm through his to help him keep upright, looking at him worriedly before leading the way out of her lap. Ophelia snorted in amusement as Fritz tried to insist he could walk, shaking her head a bit. "I just saw you smack into the wall. And besides, I feel safer walking outside at night when I look like I'm with someone - stupid people don't try things when you look like you're with someone." She hummed as he mentioned leaving, nodding quickly - but as he tried to pull away, she shook her head. "I know you don't like it but it's not going to hurt until we get outside, at least," she insisted, leading the way out - and then to a car. Once they reached it, she released him, climbing in quietly. As soon as he'd joined her, she started the engine and took off, eager to be home and in her bed - sadly, Fritz would have to deal with the couch, yet she imagined it'd be better than wherever else he might stay. And once the sun rose on a new day... they could look into his burned out husk of a lab.
Maybe, just maybe, she'd be able to actually help him. That'd be nice...

"Because I like pink!" came the overly chipper response as Ophelia trotted downstairs. She seemed wide awake, having clearly showered already and put on a fresh set of clothes. She hummed to some upbeat tune as she walked past the couch, gently smacking the back on her way through the living room into the kitchen. "I know you can't eat but I need something, then we can head over to your lab-! ... You could like... clean up, in the meantime. If you wanted. I mean, I'm not trying to be rude, but--" She seemed prone to rambling as there came vague noises of pans moving in the kitchen, water running, and then a toaster button being pushed down. Whatever she was doing, it made a lot of noise, and if it didn't help Fritz wake up god knew what would. "Oh! But I wanted to test something before we set out, it'll just take a little side trip, shouldn't be much fuss. I have access to so many things because I can think of valid excuses when using them with my studies, it's crazy!!"

Ophelia giggled at Ruthven's sleepy responses, clearly amused by his lack of energy. As he seemed to grow upset, though, she pouted and peeked around the counter at him. "Hey, stop that! We're gonna fix this, no being sad!" The woman waved a spatula threateningly before returning to her kitchen chaos, giggling a bit as she heard him mention he was in her debt. "This is something for you, silly! Though I do like the sound of you in my debt~" Ophelia laughed, humming as she cooked. It really didn't take her long, and then she stood in the kitchen and used the counter for a table as she ate, back to Ruthven - despite her cheery nature, she seemed to want to try and avoid upsetting him by flaunting her ability to eat in front of him. She finished quickly, and promptly slipped the dishes into the sink before brushing her hands off and entering the living room. "Alright! Are we all ready to go?"
